ABOUT THE MEDICAL LIBRARY
History of the Medical Library
The medical library is one of the oldest departments in the hospital. It started as a small medical library which was initially established in 1956. However, in August 1979, the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) designated the Aro Hospital complex as a collaboration centre for Research and Training in Mental and Neuroscience. The need therefore arose for a medical Library of international standard to meet with the increased tempo of academic activities in the hospital. A new Medical library was completed and commissioned in December, 1992.
Administration of the Medical Library
The general Administration of the Medical Library is headed by a seasoned and professional Medical Librarian: Dr. Oyinade Tomori CLN; she is the Deputy Director, Library and Information Services. She is supported by other professional Librarians, Library Officers and other supportive staff.
All the Units and sections are administered from the Medical Librarian’s office. The Library Administration handles internal and external administrative and communication matters of the medical library including decision making and implementation, planning, policy making, resource management, supervision and ensuring general discipline of the staff.
Units/Sections of the Library
Readers Service Unit
This section of the library handles the circulation (lending service) and patron records of the library. The Unit ensures that the shelves are in good order for easy access and quick retrieval of information resources. Sub-units under this section include Acquisition, Circulation and Reference section.
Technical service Unit
This unit involves the maintenance activities of the medical library's collection; these include collection development, cataloging and classification of library materials. Technical services are the infrastructure that enables pleasant user's experience of the library services.
